What is the Republican Vision for Monroe?

My opponent Tom Buzi (D) claims that the Republican Party has no vision.  I would like to take a moment to examine his statement and then ask you to decide if you agree when you vote in the November election.

Democrats have held the Office of First Selectman for the past 14 years. During this tenure, three successive Democrat First Selectmen, including the current incumbent, failed to make the tough decisions that needed to be made.  We are now paying the price for their lack of vision.

THIS IS THE DEMOCRAT VISION FOR MONROE!

FACT:

In 1995 the Republican First Selectman proposed the purchase of Whitney Farms Golf Course.  If the purchase had been made it would have been paid for in 2004 by golfers, not taxpayers.  The Town would own Whitney Farms Golf Course free and clear today.   At the time, the Democrat First Selectman candidate and Democrat Town Council members actively opposed and campaigned against the acquisition.  They characterized the purchase as a “money loser.”  If the acquisition had been made the Town would now have a first class recreation area for our citizens to enjoy as well as the substantial revenue that the golf course now generates, money which could now go to good use to repair our deteriorating streets and roads.  Mr. Buzi, where was the vision?

THIS IS THE DEMOCRAT VISION FOR MONROE!

FACT:

A Monroe developer approached a Democrat First Selectman about a commercial development at Technology Drive on the Trumbull/Monroe border.  The developer was rebuffed.  A medical center was built on the property but not on the Monroe portion of the building lot. Trumbull got the property taxes; Monroe got the parking lot!  Mr. Buzi, where was the vision?

THIS IS THE DEMOCRAT VISION FOR MONROE!

FACT:
Over the course of 14 years and three Democrat administrations, our streets and roads have fallen into disrepair.  Our last Republican First Selectman made our street roads a top priority and paved at an annual rate of 15 miles per year. His Democrat successor cut the rate of road repair to 7 miles per year.  In the Nunn administration less than a mile of road per year was paved.   First Selectman Buzi claims roads are a top priority of his.  Mr. Buzi has no written plan to improve Monroe’s streets.  That is why the Town’s first application for stimulus money was turned down.  Nothing in Monroe is shovel ready.  Mr. Buzi, where was the vision?

THIS IS THE DEMOCRAT VISION FOR MONROE

FACT:
This year, the Buzi administration presided over a town-wide re-evaluation process that was an unmitigated disaster.  The re-evaluation debacle generated 925 taxpayer appeals, 7 lawsuits, 22.5 million dollars in technical errors that had to be addressed by the tax assessor and 13.5 million dollars in tax adjustments made by the Board of Assessment Appeals.   The First Selectman promised taxpayers that the re-evaluation would produce a lower tax rate and lower car taxes.  Instead, he delivered an administrative debacle and higher taxes.  Mr. Buzi, where was the vision?

IT’S TIME TO RESTORE THE VISION FOR MONROE!

A succession of Democrat First Selectmen including the incumbent have made or failed to make decisions which have negatively impacted our community and it is time for a change.  It is the Democrats who lack vision and Monroe cannot afford more of the same misguided leadership.  We need real vision for Monroe.

As First Selectman of Monroe I Will:

  • Work to restore Monroe’s economic health
  • Make local Government more productive and responsive
  • Ensure that the re-evaluation process is consistent and fair
  • Fix our roads and streets and maintain our infrastructure.

I hope you will join me and VOTE FOR A NEW VISION FOR MONROE.

14 YEARS OF DEMOCRATIC ADMINISTRATION IS ENOUGH!
