"Steve Vavrek has delivered for Monroe. He is the rare leader that actually accomplished what he said he would-- a budget passed on the first try that balances the needs of taxpayers and students, road repairs and infrastructure improvements, and competent, responsible town government. Steve Vavrek has proven he is a great leader for a great town."--Dan Debicella, Former CT State Senator

To The Editor: I am in total agreement with the views Tom Buzi expressed in his letter regarding Monroe’s budget. This budget referendum process is a farce. Why is it a farce? Because our elected officials lack the strength or guts to make some tough decisions. When are the First Selectman, Town Council and the Board of Finance going to demonstrate some leadership? The comments from Council members like, “To me a no vote is a no vote” or “more cuts need to be made” are absurd. I wonder if they would feel the same way if a referendum was passed by a minority of residents, calling for the closing of the Senior Center, or the shutting down of Wolfe Park, or the selling of open space to developers. I hope they would take a stand and prevent any of these scenarios from becoming realities. One would hope our elected officials would take a stand in support of this budget and express to the residents that this is the budget necessary-without further cuts so we can maintain the quality of life in Monroe we all enjoy. It’s time for strong leadership in Monroe. It time for our elected officials, starting with the First Selectman, to be leaders and not followers of a small minority of Monroe residents. Sincerely, Michael Visconti Monroe, CT |
